September word of the week entry. By William Steed

The Belly of the Feast

The feast was a fast-food frenzy –
Fat fries and falafel kebabs.
Come midnight, with beer and a mislabeled
My belly went to war with my abs.

My sheets turned from dry to floating,
My skin turned from pink to pale white.
And soon my poor colon, from gas it was swollen,
I held all my muscles full tight.

With all of the strength I could muster,
I hauled my feet onto the floor.
I let loose my dignity and on hands and knees,
Slowly dragged myself out through the door.

My last thought before my oblivion
Was to curl myself into a ball
And hope that the horrible sounds of my pain
Would not travel far down the hall.

Alas! If only ‘twere true.
It makes me even moroser.
They found me two feet from the toilet door
With the feast another foot closer.

This is an Awesome piece! I would rather put my praise to you with more eloquence, but it awesome seems to be the only appropriately broad-reaching word in my late-night vocabulary! I must say I struggled a bit with the early rhythm,as I often do (therefore probably my issue, not yours), by the third stanza I was totally into it, and of course (I'm sure all would agree), the last verse is the best verse. Prose is at its best when it is a platform for personality and wit, and this piece is a very sound stage.
